Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) (Scottish Executive, 2006) encourages a child centered approached to learning. It focusses on teachers becoming facilitators of learning to ensure that each child is given the same high expectations in order to reach their full potential. Through the use of assessment, in particular, self-assessment, the child is able to reflect upon their own work and use their assessment to inform their next steps, therefore taking responsibility of their own learning. In addition to this, with the introduction of Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) (Scottish Government, 2011) it is the responsibility of teachers to apply assessment in a way that will enhance learning by informing potential next steps as well as identifying any areas that may need to be revisited.
The aim of this enquiry was to assess the impact of increased self-assessment in the classroom.
